Doreen Cougars Basketall Club

Cougars Basketball Club has a proud history and tradition. Formed in 1969 as East Brunswick Basketball Club (E.B.B.C.), the club serviced the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne. Founding members were Rino Zancan and Steve Chadd. Our FIRST main training venue was the Church of Christ hall in Rae Street, North Fitzroy . Between 1969 and 1990, the club participated in the following competitions:- 1) Albert Park Basketball Stadium, Melbourne Showgrounds competition, Diamond Valley competition, Broadmeadows competition and Thomastown competition and later when built Coburg Basketball stadium. 2) In 1984 the club entered their first teams at in the Diamond Valley competition and in 2014 entered it’s first team in EDJBA. 3) In 1990 when Mill Park stadium was built the Thomastown competition folded and moved to Mill Park stadium- Rino Zancan our Chairman was the first President of WCBA (Mill Park competition) until he relinquished the position to become stadium manager at Mill Park. 4) The club moved to Mill Park and surrounding districts in 1975 and in 2012 the club expanded it’s catchment area to Mernda, Doreen, Wollert , Craigieburn, and Donnybrook. In 2014 , the club registered the name Doreen Cougars – also an incorporated Association-to ensure that we could enter teams in EDJBA as a requirement is you must have a suburb name. The club has continued the tradition of servicing the local community and promotes the sport of basketball to children and adults in a family orientated environment. The club is managed by a Chief Executive Officer and a committee comprising of past players and players’ parents. A successful club not only in Victoria but also in Australia, the club has representation at junior and senior championships, and has / had representation in State , Australian teams and finally at international levels. Having provided the opportunity to thousands of children throughout the fifty five years that the club has existed, the club still continues to provide opportunity to any child interested in playing basketball.

Our Vision

Our Vision

Doreen Cougars Basketball Club's vision is to encourage and promote basketball in the Northern Suburbs of Victoria and its surrounding districts, fostering the development of socially desirable attitudes and values through play, training, and competition in a fun, inclusive and safe environment for our families.

Child Safety
Sport is a vital part of the development of children in Australia that provides significant benefits to the lives of kids. Sporting clubs want to see children and young people engaged, excited, and enjoying their sport; passionate about their game, their club and their team. Children and young people want to feel accepted, connected, and safe in these environments.

We withhold a zero tolerance policy to any form of child abuse.

It is Victorian Government legislation that requires all sporting organisations that provide sporting services to children to implement Child Safe Standards. All organisations working with children are required to engage a Child Safe Officer/s responsible for identifying and managing risk relating to child safety.

The identification of a Child Safe Officer/s provides children, young people, families and volunteers with a clearly identifiable support network in the event of a suspected child safety issue. However, this does not remove the statutory obligation of all adults to report child abuse as per the Crimes Act 1958 (Vic) and Mandatory Reporting regulations.

Doreen Cougars Basketball Clubs appointed Child Safety Officers contact details can be found in our Club Committee & Members.
